Rooftop heat pump unit
Also called heat pump RTU, packaged heat pump
This is version 0.4.0. The latest is 0.5.0.
Service life
Years in service. The band runs from the shortest to the longest life the sources state, so it shows how much they disagree, not how long 80% of units last. The line is the median of the stated lives.
Basis
- 15 years · CNA e-Tool Estimated Useful Life Table, p12 · HUD CNA 3.4.3.1.1 “Electric heat pump, condenser, pad or rooftop” — U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (planning life)Same life for family and elderly properties. US multifamily housing. HUD's row also covers split-system heat pump condensers on a pad.
- 15 years · Design standards: employer's requirements – Technical Manual (ER-DFE-XX-XX-T-X-0201, revision A-C01), p238 · 5.4.4 “Air source heat pumps: 15 years” — Department for Education (England) (design life)Printed page 238. Air source heat pumps, type not stated; in UK schools these are often air-to-water units for wet heating, so the match to air-to-air splits and rooftop units is loose. Minimum life expectancy (design requirement) for DfE-funded school buildings. Minimum design requirements placed on contractors for school buildings, not observed replacement ages. Section 5.1.4 (sanitaryware) refers to CIBSE Guide M Appendix 12.A1 'in general'.
- 16.2 years · Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Air Cooled, Three-Phase, Small Commercial Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps With a Cooling Capacity of Less Than 65,000 Btu/h (NOPR), 87 FR 18290, March 30, 2022, p11 · “"the average lifetimes of 19 years for air conditioners and 16.2 years for heat pumps"” — U.S. Department of Energy (planning life)Printed page 18300. class: three-phase commercial heat pumps <65,000 Btu/h (single-package and split). Carried over from the September 2020 NODA/RFI. Proposed rule, not final.
- 21 years · Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Air-Cooled Commercial Package Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps (direct final rule), 89 FR 44052, May 20, 2024, p41 · IV.F.6 “Equipment Lifetime: "DOE assumed a mean lifetime of 21 years for small equipment classes"” — U.S. Department of Energy (planning life)Printed page 44092. class: small ACUAC/ACUHP (>=65,000 and <135,000 Btu/h), air conditioners and heat pumps alike. Carried over from the January 2016 DFR (which gave 21.1 years). Also in the LCC inputs summary table, p.39 (printed 44090).
- 23 years · Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Air-Cooled Commercial Package Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps (direct final rule), 89 FR 44052, May 20, 2024, p41 · IV.F.6 “Equipment Lifetime: "a mean lifetime of 23 years for large equipment classes"” — U.S. Department of Energy (planning life)Printed page 44092. class: large ACUAC/ACUHP (>=135,000 and <240,000 Btu/h). Carried over from the January 2016 DFR (which gave 22.6 years).
- 30 years · Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Air-Cooled Commercial Package Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps (direct final rule), 89 FR 44052, May 20, 2024, p41 · IV.F.6 “Equipment Lifetime: "For very large equipment classes, DOE created a new distribution with an assumed mean lifetime of 30 years"” — U.S. Department of Energy (planning life)Printed page 44092. class: very large ACUAC/ACUHP (>=240,000 and <760,000 Btu/h); new in this rule (2016 DFR used 33.7 years). Very large units are less typical rooftop units.

Municipal lives for HVAC (D30)
48 municipalities in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta state a life for HVAC as a whole, in 39 distinct tables: 10–50 years, median 20. 65 rows come from capital asset policies (accounting lives, used for amortization) and 6 from asset management plans (planning lives, used to forecast replacement). They describe the system rather than this component, and none is a measured life.
Years. Each dot is one stated life and each bar a stated range; equal values stack. Hollow marks are planning lives from asset management plans; filled marks are accounting lives from policies. The dashed line is the median. Policies that copy the same table count once.

Open questions
- Every source here is a published planning, design or accounting life. None is observed replacement data.
- Some maintenance intervals come from TM 5-692-1, an Army manual for mission-critical (C4ISR) facilities; they may be tighter than typical commercial practice.
